Over the years, I’ve gone back and forth between using “normal” antiperspirant deodorants to using natural ones from the health food store.
I’d use the regular stuff and start to feel bad about all the toxins and aluminium in it, so then I’d switch to a natural kind, but would find that it doesn’t work. And this would go on in a cycle.
It wasn’t until our son was born that I really made a decision to ditch the anti-antiperspirants. As I was breast-feeding, something just felt so wrong about putting the aluminium-laden antiperspirant under my arms, right next to where my mammary glands carried milk for my newborn baby.
After trying another natural deodorant and finding it didn’t work, I just decided to stop. Since I was a sleep-deprived new mom anyway, I didn’t really care how I smelled. So I’ll be honest and say that I went through a couple weeks of not using anything deodorant-like at all. After a while, my body adjusted and I found that I didn’t need the deodorant as much.
And then, I found a homemade deodorant recipe that was super easy and actually works. I was sceptical about it at first, since I tried so many other natural deodorants with disappointing results, that I doubted something so simple could be effective. There are only 3 ingredients: coconut oil, baking soda and tea tree oil. My recipe is inspired by this recipe.
I use a little baby-food jar to make mine. First I scoop in some coconut oil and put the jar into a container of hot water so the coconut oil in the jar melts. Then I add a bunch of baking soda and several drops of tea tree oil, and mix it all in.
I’ve tried making it and filling up an empty deodorant stick with this stuff. However, I found that I needed to keep it in the fridge otherwise it would get melty and leak out at the top. I don’t mind just having it in a jar.
The tea tree oil is a natural anti-fungal so it’s great in a deodorant.
There you go, it’s so simple and it works.
